NY’s Crumbs Bake Shop: 90210 Grand Opening
Posted by Caroline on Crack under Los Angeles, Dining, Sweets, Cupcakes -All right, no one told New York to stop sending cupcakes over here dammit and now one of their famed cupcakeries, Crumbs Bake Shop, is opening up a scant two blocks down the street from Sprinkles in Beverly Hills. Gasp! Scandalous. I wonder if that 26-person line outside of Sprinkles will go down any?
But apparently these babies are really different from that grand dame of L.A. cupcakes in that they’re big and chunky and messy and also ooey and gooey. Sprinkles looks pretty prissy in comparison. And I think unlike Sprinkles, they might let you take pictures of their goods since there are plenty of pics of ‘em on Flickr.
From the Crumbs site:
Crumbs Bake Shop first opened its doors in March of 2003 on the Upper West Side of Manhattan by Mia & Jason Bauer. The menu is an irresistible blend of comfort-oriented classics and elegant baked goods but the specialty of the house is cupcakes! There are more than 25 varieties baked fresh daily and every Monday you can find a new cupcake of the week. The stores are inspired by old-time candy shops and are warm and inviting with wood cases, tiled floors and wall to wall treats.
Just some of their goodies lifted from their New York menu, prepare for sugar overload:
- Caramel Apple: One of our most popular cupcakes. Incredibly moist vanilla cake with apples baked right in the batter. Frosted with our signature vanilla buttercream swirled with apples and topped with drizzled caramel.
- Devil Dog Cupcake: Rich chocolate cake filled with whipped vanilla buttercream. The cupcake is frosted with vanilla buttercream and sprinkled with mini chocolate chips, rolled in chocolate crumbs and finally drizzled with dark chocolate.
- Fluffernutter: Another nostalgic classic. Vanilla cake filled with our signature marshmallow flavored buttercream. The frosting is our vanilla buttercream mixed with real peanut butter and rollled in white sprinkles.
- Oreo Cupcake: Heavenly chocolate cake frosted with Crumbs signature vanilla buttercream with crushed Oreos mixed in the frosting and decorated with large chunks of Oreo cookies.
Does anyone else’s teeth hurt? In any case, the grand opening, which has been buzzed about all over the Internet as going off this Friday, is apparently supposed to happen next week instead, according to the bake shop’s West Coast PR person. Details to come.
EVENT: GRAND OPENING sometime the week of the 17th. Details TK

[…] This just in: The new Crumbs Bake Shop in Beverly Hills IS opening on Monday, according to the store’s West Coast PR person. But since it’ll be a “soft launch” the shop will open at 11am instead of its usual 9am. Regular hours will be 9am-11pm Monday through Saturday and til 10pm on Sunday. That’s three hours longer than Sprinkles down the street on the weekdays. […]

[…] Finally! I was able to make it to Crumbs Bake Shop after being intimidated by those crazy Beverly Hills drivers and traffic. But after work and after a lame happy hour at El Torito in BH, dotsara and I walked over to Sprinkles’ newest adversary. […]

[…] On our list of contenders? First, Sprinkles, Los Angeles’ most famous cupcakerie. I had heard the Sprinkles lore of frosting shots and decadent flavors, but not often finding myself in that particularly tony section of Beverly Hills, I had never actually tasted them. Second, Crumbs, a rogue newcomer with the audacity to open mere blocks from the Sprinkles juggernaut. I first heard of Crumbs here on the eve of their opening and had been carefully plotting how to get my hands on those unusual, creative cupcakes ever since. And finally, my sentimental favorite, Auntie Em’s in Eagle Rock. I’ll admit it’s a bit unfair to include Auntie Em’s since it’s really a restaurant that just happens to sell amazing cupcakes, not a cupcake shop, but for me, their cupcakes are the gold standard, the benchmark to which all cupcakes should be compared.
