New Cocktail List at Seven Grand
Posted by Caroline on Crack under Los Angeles, Nightlife, Cocktails -After the disappointing and overcrowded Interpol listening party at the Natural History Museum, my dude and I went to Seven Grand to see if we could still salvage the night. And sure enough, my fave bar didn’t let me down. Not only did I get to run into some of my crackheads who were in the midst of barhopping some of my other favorite downtown bars but turns out the new and more extensive specialty cocktail list is now up and running.
Looks like the Irish coffees are gone and more juleps have appeared on the menu but then again maybe that’s just for the season. My new favorites are the Irish Antidote and the Big Mak, both so delicious and yet dangerously and misleadingly innocent-tasting in that you knock ‘em back so fast cuz they’re so yummy and go down easy. And then their potency hits you. Yikes.
After the jump, the yummy additions on the new list (thanks, Damian!):
- Apple Blow Fizz, $12: Lairde’s Applejack, lemon juice, simple syrup shaken with pasteurized egg white and topped with club soda
- Big Mak, $10: Fresh blackberries, muddled and shaken with Maker’s Mark bourbon
- Blackberry Julep, $12: Mint and blackberries muddled with Bullet bourbon over ice
- Bourbon Crusta, $11: Maker’s Mark shaken with Cointreau, maraschino liqueur and lemon juice
- Dr. Blinker, $10: Jim Beam shaken with raspberry and grapefruit juice
- Elder Fitzgerald, $12: Old Fitzgerald bourbon and St. Germaine Elderflower liqueur
- Grand Apple Cocktail, $12: Applejack, Maker’s Mark and fresh grated cinnamon
- The Irish Antidote, $10: Jameson Irish whiskey on the rocks with lemon juice and honey syrup
- Ramos Gin Fizz, $9: Plymouth Gin with lemon and lime juice shaken with a touch of cream and pasteurized egg white
- Seven Large Julep, $18: Fresh muddled mint and Black Maple Hill bourbon served over ice and sparkling wine
Damian, my fave bartender there, said that all the bartenders have been schooled in these new cocktails so you really can’t go wrong no matter who you order from. (Although Damian is still my favorite. Heh.)
If you want more for your money and aren’t too much of a whiskey purist, I recommend getting the cocktails. My crackheads who had ordered straightup bourbon, whiskey, scotch from the long list last night weren’t too pleased with the finger of drink they got for their 16 or so bucks. But, like I said, if you want it no other way but straightup, you won’t mind the prices so much.

You know how there are some bars (Bergin’s, perhaps?) that give you a plaque or stein on the wall once you’ve consumed some ginormous amount of their beers, drinks, etc.? Shouldn’t you get some sort of award for having gone to so many different LA watering holes? Maybe a stein star on the walk of fame. You and Foster Brooks.

The execution left something to be desired. Had the blackberry julep. It was a fine concoction but the bartender poured it into the cup and then began mashing ice in. Not only did I have to see his hands all over my ice, but he actually squeezed most of the drink out of the cup in the process and let it run over into the bar drain. The sip and a half that remained in the cup was good but the booze I paid for ran into the ocean without ever running through me.
And this after the barkeep made a point of telling us that who pour there are, in fact, “mixologists”.

Sounds like an arguement for shots.

Doobie, What? That doesn’t make sense. He used his hands to mash ice? The drink is poured over ice, not served as a slushy or whatever. Weird.

Q:”You aren’t “The” Caroline are you?”
A:”What do you mean “The” Caroline?”
Q:”The one with the website???”
A:”YES!!!”
Hahaha It was fun to meet you that night, the rest of the night went well. After ordering 2 Big Maks and only getting one sip I was finally able to get one to myself, yummy!!!

Carlos,
That totally threw me off when you guys said that. And then you all acted giddy and offered me drinks making me blush even more. But it was great to meet you guys.

Well, next time you are there look for us in the booth, since we now dubbed it “The Corner”, or maybe you should avoid “The Corner” at all cost. But we still will offer you drinks since we never would have found the place if it wasn’t for your site.

One jovial person in our gang was determined to be a “lowball” hero at all costs so we had to call it a night for obvious reasons.
Indeed, the Big Mak was tasty. I imagine it would go very well with a tasty cigar. Not a clove! hehe!
