This Weekend: Must Be That Blue Moon

bluemoon_icstars_big.jpg

It’s going to be a special weekend what with the rare blue moon (the second full moon in a calendar month) making an appearance. Hopefully if it’s a clear night you can spend it moongazing with friends or that special someone. But what to do after?

Thursday, May 31

Once in a Blue Moon Dinner at Avalon
The Avalon’s chic blue on blue restaurant will be celebrating the blue moon with a poolside blue-inspired dinner of blue corn tortilla crusted crab cakes, humboldt fog blue cheese, blue nose tuna nicoise, grilled NY steak with point reyes blue, and blueberry shortcake. Drink specials include Blue Moon Beer and specialty blue on blue martinis.

  • 6pm-10:30pm. $65/person. blue on blue at Avalon, 9400 West Olympic Boulevard, Beverly Hills 90212. Reservations.

Friday, June 1

Moonlight Hike at Big Santa Anita Canyon
This is something I’ve always wanted to do, hike with just the moon lighting the way. And it’ll be a blue moon at that. Lovely! Hikers meet at Chantry Flat armed with flashlights and hiking boots. They are then taken on a leisurely 2-mile roundtrip hike. Keep in mind that this is more of a social event than a workout. The pack leader will bring the drinks and appetizers. All you have to do is dress appropriately for the activity and the weather, bring a flashlight (with a red filter) and enjoy the sights and sounds of the night.

  • 7:30pm. $10. Pack Station at Chantry Flat, 1835 N. Santa Anita Avenue, Arcadia 91006. Reservations: tour@adamspackstation.com

Natural History Museum’s Last First Friday: Deerhoof and Autolux
Every first Friday of the month since January, the museum stayed open late til 10pm allowing guests to party among the fossils and this Friday is the last of the First Fridays series. Bay Area rock band Deerhoof and L.A. art rock band Autolux provide the tunes along with DJ Matthew David from Dublab. The music starts at 8pm but you might want to come early since admission is first come, first serve.

  • 8pm-10pm. 2-for-1 adult admission: $9. NHM, 900 Exposition Boulevard, Los Angeles 90007

Saturday, June 2

James Perse Summer Sample Sale
When I think of James Perse, I think incredibly, soft, expensive cotton t-shirts. Browse ‘em at Bloomies but never buy them. Fortunately dear ol’ James is having a warehouse sample sale where men and women tees, tops, hoodies and sweats are up to 70% off.

  • 9am-5pm. Siren Studios, 6063 W. Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles. Cash and credit cards only.

Sunday, June 3

16th Annual Los Feliz Village Street Fair
Hip Los Feliz Village is celebrating its 16th annual street fair. Boutique stores, tasty food from the Village restaurants and live music. And if pony rides and moon bounces aren’t your thing, I know the wine garden sponsored by Vermont Restaurant is!

  • 11am-8pm. Vermont Avenue between Hollywood Boulevard and Franklin Avenue.

Whist’s Guinness Cake: Still Waiting for the Bomb To Drop

Guinness Cake

Guinness Cake served with Bailey’s Irish ice cream, whiskey sauce and caramelized sugar. Are you kidding me? Brooke Mosley, the newish pastry chef at Whist in the Viceroy Hotel and former pastry assistant at Grace, created it and I of course had to check it out since it’s got all my favorite ingredients. So I dragged along fellow bloggers, Erin and Nancy on this evening of decadent desserts and expensive cocktails at the chi-chi Santa Monica hotel. On a Tuesday night, I knew that we’d have no trouble finding a spot in the bar, as well as breezing in dressed in workday casual wear for that matter.

Muse’s Art Walk After Party at HD Buttercup

artwalkparty431.jpg

LACMA’s Muse Art Walk After Party at HD Buttercup looks like a must-do this Saturday. So much is going on what with live performances, djs spinning all night long, and lots of free liquor that I’m thinking of skipping the 2nd Annual Culver City Art Walk altogether just so I have enough energy for the after party.

In the daytime from noon to 8pm, art lovers are welcome to check out the Culver City art scene via a self-guided walking tour through the 40 art galleries in the area where you can meet gallery owners, artists and fellow art lovers/collectors. Sounds exhausting, right?

But then again a dance party with cultured hipsters may be just the ticket after a long day of expanding horizons.

Special party features:

  • Free drinks from Absolut Pear, Grolsch, and Two Tone Farm Wineries
  • Hors d’oeuvres from Beacon, Bluebird Cafe, Border Grill and Cuidad
  • djs and live performance by Giant Drag
  • HD Buttercup setting so you can party and peruse pretty furniture — watch where you set that cocktail down though

EVENT: SATURDAY, JUNE 2 from 8pm to 11pm

H.D. Buttercup Manufacturer Furniture Mart

Los Angeles, California 90034

Tickets: $32

Original Pancake House: Not Your Regular Flap Jacks

Just when you think you know pancakes…flap jacks…hotcakes…along comes the Original Pancake House. OK, it’s actually been around since 1953 but I just heard about it and visited the Redondo Beach location today. My friend suggested it since he was craving the oven-baked cinnamon-glazed apple pancakes. And before I could even think to compare this breakfast joint to IHOP, its Web site set me straight.

For a franchise, it has a pretty eccentric and ridiculously extensive menu with every type of waffle, crepe, flap jack, and pancake you can think of. AND they boasted pretty high-quality ingredients like 93 score butter and fresh grade AA eggs as well as fresh in-house roasted coffee. Sold!

Katana’s BBQ Party on the Sunset Strip

katana.jpg

Katana has yummy, albeit super-pricey sushi and a chi-chi scene that’s so not my thing, but I must admit that this event sounds like a pretty cool way to spend summer Sunday evenings: the 5th Annual Red Sun BBQ Garden, which is the sushi restaurant’s hip summer patio party. The bbq shindig kicks off tomorrow night and will go on every Sunday through the hot season til Labor Day weekend. Knock back some Red Sun beer or split a scorpion bowl-size cocktail with a friend. KCRW dj Thomas Golubic will provide the tunes and you can keep your dancing energy up by snacking on special Robata barbecue.

EVENT: EVERY SUNDAY til SEPTEMBER 3 from 6 to 11pm

8439 West Sunset Boulevard
Hollywood, California 90069

Colorado Wine Company: Wine Taster’s Choice

Gladiator syrah

If you love wine but aren’t a wine expert, I’ve got the perfect wine store/bar for you where you can explore, learn, shop and taste: the Colorado Wine Company in Eagle Rock. Here, you don’t have little written descriptions of the wine telling you what it tastes like and why you should buy it, rather you have the knowledgeable, friendly salespeople at the store/bar to help you with your selection.

At first I thought, “Great, now I’ll feel pressured to buy it.” But when I told the guy that I was looking for a full-bodied red (I like Zin or Syrah) under $15 he pointed me to the right shelf, gave me several intriguing suggestions and then left me alone to ponder the selection. I totally trusted that he knew what he was talking about and didn’t feel bad for spending so little as he had “the perfect wine and it’s only $14.99.” Ni-ice.

This Holiday Weekend: You’ll Need One More Day

Found on http://www.stumbleupon.com/tag/american-flag/

Yay! Memorial Day Weekend’s here, the holiday that kickstarts the summer! Of course it looks like so much is going on this weekend that you’ll feel like you need one more day to recover. Observe the following:

Cinespia’s Cemetery Screening of Vertigo
Hitchcock at the cemetery, now that’s what I’m talking about. Granted it’s not my most fave Hitchcock film (Rear Window is) but it’s still effectively suspenseful. And nothing says Memorial Day Weekend like a summer’s eve picnic in this field of memorials.

  • Saturday, May 26 at 7pm. $10 donation. 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard, Hollywood. (323) 469-1181.

Fiesta Hermosa
Every year, whether its Memorial Day Weekend or Labor Day Weekend, I like to check out this beachy-keen street fair. Not so much for the food booths, the arts & crafts for sale or even the people watching but to simply enjoy a sunny, festive day in Hermosa Beach. This Saturday I’ll finally get to use my brand-new Amsterdam to bike down from Playa del rey to the fiesta and take in the scenic beaches along the bike path.

  • Friday, May 26 to Monday, May 28 from 10am-6pm. Hermosa Avenue and Pier Avenue, Hermosa Beach.

Found Footage Festival
Another reason you should have destroyed that videotape of you dancing to Salt n Pepa’s “Push It” with your high school dance troupe: the Found Footage Festival. All things not-so-sacred and forgotten on VHS are resurrected from thrift stores and garage sales for the amusement of audiences all over the world. This fun film fest, which Film Threat calls “true underground cinema,” comes to a Hollywood bar where you can appropriately enjoy the home movies like your uncles did during all those family gettogethers: drunk.

  • Thursday, May 24 to Saturday, May 26 at 8pm. $15. M Bar, 1253 North Vine Street, Hollywood. (323) 856-0036.

The Love Festival
Party down at the Memorial Coliseum with Ladytron, DJ Reza and more. Three stages of live entertainment, full bars, vendor village and lots of dancing. Doors open at 7pm and close at 4am. Now THAT’s a party.

  • Saturday, May 26. $45. LA Memorial Coliseum Expo Gardens, 3939 S Figueroa Street, Downtown (323) 960-5155

Star Wars Celebration IV
Can you believe it’s been 30 years since the first Star Wars? Egads! In celebration of this iconic film’s anniversary, behold the four-day party — probably the only place in L.A. you can sport Princess Leia’s cinnamon bun hairdo and not get a second look. The convention’s got action figures, Billy Dee and lightsaber-wielding fans.

  • Thursday, May 24 to Monday, May 28. Starts at 9am. $125 for 4-day pass, $45 a day. LA Convention Center, 1201 S Figueroa Street, Downtown. (213) 741-1151.

Topanga Days Country Fair
I always mean to check out this hippy-dippy fair but usually give up after driving up and down Topanga Canyon Boulevard yields no parking space for me (and I don’t wanna shuttle it). But one day, maybe I’ll try harder and stop to check out the food, artisan wares and music. Also in Topanga, the Tough Topanga 10K on Saturday at 8am where you maneuver a rugged course that’ll kick your ass.

  • Saturday, May 26 to Monday, May 28. 1440 N Topanga Canyon Boulevard, Topanga.
