Cupcake Challenger #2: SusieCakes
Posted by Caroline on Crack under Los Angeles, Dining, Sweets, Cupcakes -Taste tester #2: dotsara.
Qualifications: She likes cupcakes.
Cupcake challenger #2: SusieCakes in Brentwood. dotsara said of the cupcake store: “The employees were great! They asked when we would be eating the cupcakes and since it was going to be the next day, they saran-wrapped the box so the cupcakes could stay fresh.” As for the display case: “It’s a bake shop, so the cakes take center display — the cupcakes just sit at the bottom of the case.” In regards to the overall buying experience: “The store is bright and clean — no wait, attentive staff.” For her parking experience near SusieCakes: “I got lucky and found street parking on San Vicente Boulevard — but that isn’t too common in Brentwood.” Cupcakes: $3 each.
- Red Velvet Cupcake: This one had a nice red color cake with a good amount of sprinkles and lots of frosting on top. The girls liked that the SusieCakes had “sexy internal frosting.” Opinions differed with regard to presentation. Some thought it adorable while others called it nondescript. Consensus also said that the cake was a little dry but we all loved the cream cheese/buttercream frosting which had a nice texture and was a good combination of sweet and tangy.
- Chocolate Cupcake: This scored pretty high with the ladies. The chocolate cake was moist and airy with an “interesting” chocolate flavor which was different in a good way. The frosting had a good texture, not too dense or rich but was a little sloppy-looking. Cute colorful, round sprinkles sparsely decorated the top.
- Wild Card — Chocolate Mint Cupcake: This was sooo yummy, if you like mint that is. It, too, scored well. Not only was the rich buttercream frosting refreshingly minty but so was the moist chocolate cake. “De-friggin-lightful” and “green is good” were the standout comments here. As this cupcake was decorated for St. Patrick’s Day, tiny green shamrocks were sprinkled on the top of the mint green frosting. Very cute.

Ha!
Also, one of the upsides for Susie Cakes is that they have other fantastic baked goods. The carrot cake, by the way, is the best carrot cake. Pretty much ever.
Yes, ever.

Actually, ChiGirl, I think me and my testers have pretty much sworn off cupcakes forever…or at least six months.

I live in Brentwood, and am a big fan of Susie Cakes. Just this week, my dear hubby bought me a small red velvet bday cake. I am surprised to read that yours was dry, because I was swooning over the moistness of the cake. The only thing I can think of is that they were a day old. The next day when I raided the fridge for another slice, a lot of the moistness from the night before had been sapped out. I would try their red velvet again if you get a chance to eat it same day and see what you think. Or, maybe it’s just better in cake form. Either way, I have spent the entire week in some sort of cake-comma. Yum.
