Stood Up by Hurry Date at Tangerine

Bar at Tangerine

Ever had a blind date where you pick a place and time, worry about what you’re going to wear and even almost chicken out, and then you get stood up anyway? Last month I wrote about Hurry Date’s Wine Tasting at Tangerine in WeHo. Dre and I got our tickets weeks ago. Unlike the dating service’s usual events, this was a wine tasting mixer and not a speed dating thing so we were almost looking forward to it. Seemed like a nice way to ease ourselves into the whole proactive dating method.

The venue for the wine tasting was Tangerine Cantina Y Cocina on Sunset and the emailed reminder we got the day before said to show up at 6:30 for check-in. But when we arrived at 6:25, the only people at the restaurant were the restaurant workers and some bar patrons watching the Western Conference Final basketball game on the TV monitors that hung over the bar.

We asked our bartender if she knew anything about it but she deferred us to the owner of the place, a man with the regal name Kingsley. He told us, “Hurry Date used to have events here regularly but then it just stopped. The last event, nobody showed up.”

Not knowing what to do next we ordered some drinks. I got a chocolate cake martini ($10) to soothe my bruised ego. Kidding. Got it because it sounded yummy and it was. It didn’t taste like an actual chocolate cake with Frangelico, Godiva liqueur and vanilla vodka, but it sure was potent and rich. A shot of cream might have helped.

Since we had been expecting passed appetizers at this make-believe event, I hadn’t eaten beforehand. Starving, I begrudgingly ordered their $11 chicken quesadilla. Yeah, I hate to say it, but even though it cost more than I’d usually like to spend on an appetizer, it was tasty plus it came with a side of sour cream and guacamole at no extra charge. The tortilla was thicker than the norm with crispy edges. The quesadilla itself was stuffed with cheese and savory grilled chicken chunks.

Sitting at the bar, Dre and I simply enjoyed the venue. The plush bar area had a beautiful crystal chandelier that hung overhead and a huge mirror sat over the bar reflecting back a room that seemed from another time and place. With black and white pictures hanging on the walls and velvet wall accents, it gave the old school vibe of an old Hollywood supper club. And the bartender was so friendly and attentive, it almost didn’t feel like we were in the notoriously attitude-y section of the Sunset Strip.

Eventually when 7 o’clock rolled around, the scheduled time for the Hurry Date event, we noticed about 10 other people looking as bewildered and out-of-place as we were when we first walked in. We even befriended a couple of girls who we convinced to go with us to the sports bar Red Rock next door for a real singles scene. There, we laughed about the whole weird Hurry Date mishap and even though we didn’t meet any date potentials we made some new friends. But I still want my money back.

Bodega Winebar: Keeping Wine Simple

winebar.gif

No more Sugar, baby. Not that you were missing it all that much. The $2 dance club on Broadway and Lincoln has been replaced by a very sophisticated venue, Bodega Winebar. Opened just this month and sister to the established location in Pasadena, it’s already quite the hot spot for well-groomed singles.

But here, you don’t have to be a member of the Wine Club or a Wine Spectator subscriber to understand and appreciate their menu. Everything is simply the same price ($8 a glass, $20 a carafe, $30 a bottle) to save you the stress of wondering if you’re cheating yourself by going with the $8/glass wine instead of the $13/glass one.

Also, the menu handily provides a description of each wine’s flavors, i.e. the Graziano Zinfandel from Mendocino is plum, blackberry, raspberry, spicy, full body. I had this one and it was tasty. Even the wine glasses are of the stemless variety, so you can grab hold of your drink instead of having to clasp it oh-so delicately by a stem and worry about it toppling over.

Although Bodega sounds like a winebar for dummies, the 20- and 30-something crowd was pretty sophisticated-looking with men in their dress shirts and slacks and women in stylish, not clubby, frocks. One group was celebrating a birthday, couples canoodled in the dark corners and hipsters lounged and stood around sipping wine.

The lighting was dimmed candlelight low, and there was a mix of long tables and chairs in the main room and plush sofas and ottomans in the corners. The dj stand is located in the same place as it was in the Sugar days in the back but it seems bigger in its enormous wooden Starbucks-counter way. A place is cleared in front of it, apparently for dancing but no one was doing any of that. Instead the music served as jazzy ambience.

I liked this place. It’s bigger than Air Conditioned Lounge and, as I said, simpler. Plus they serve food! Stuff like panini sliders and pizza. Not that I would forsake the A/C, I just have another place to go to if perchance I wanna take a wine tour of West L.A. winebars — Primitivo, The Otheroom, A/C and this.

Fiesta Hermosa: NOW Summer Can Begin

Summer really doesn’t begin for me until it’s kicked off by Hermosa Beach’s Fiesta Hermosa — the largest SoCal arts & crafts fair. Bookending the summer on Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day Weekend, they’ve got live music, all the food you can eat from around the world, beer and wine gardens, great booths for shopping the works of community artists and ample people watching.

Since parking is unthinkable there, I usually like to park in Manhattan Beach and walk down. It’s a nice stroll on the beach path what with all the bikers, skaters and beach-goers and it gives you the opportunity to sober up during the 1.5-mile walk back if you end up drinking for some reason.

At the fiesta there are food vendors throughout but an actual food court in the lot behind Hennessey’s where if you don’t see anything you like you must not be all that hungry today. They’ve got everything — shishkabobs, funnel cake, tri-tip sandwiches, gourmet sausages, quesadillas.

The beer and wine gardens offer microbrews from Union Cattle Company and California wines.

You can push your way through the crowds of beachwear-clad people on the streets of Hermosa, which are closed off to traffic for the festival, and check out the 270 vendors hawking their arts and crafts — paintings, jewelry, photographs, clothes, etc. I never buy anything but it’s always fun to shop. There’s even a petting zoo for the kiddies where you can feed goats, goats and a zebra.

It’s a nice supplement for a day at the beach or you can stick around at night for the notorious pier nightlife scene.

EVENT: Sunday, May 28 – Monday, May 29 10am-6pm

gr/eats: Giant Robot Serves Up the Great Eats

Salmon teriyaki lunch at gr/eats

Recently I happened upon online reviews for the eatery spawn of Giant Robot store and Giant Robot 2 called gr/eats, which opened back in April 2005. If you only judge it from its site you’d think someone just threw a bunch of spare tables and chairs into a rec room and called it a restaurant. But if Asian-American pop culture magazine Giant Robot has anything to do with it, you should know that there’s something more stylish to it.

A friend and I ventured over to Little Tokyo West for lunch yesterday. The restaurant’s storefront itself was easy to miss since it was recessed off the street. My friend who was meeting me there even got lost, while I knew that it would be near one of the Giant Robot stores.

Once inside I was relieved to see that there were only a couple of those cafeteria-style tables taken up. I guess all the hype from its opening last year died down. Regardless, for some reason I chose a corner table squished between two other tables. Music was piped in from the speakers integrated into the ceiling and wood block paintings decorated the walls.

Giant RobotA tall, lanky guy looking very scruffy Silverlake-y shuffled up to me with the cutest kimono-print apron around his waist and a sheet of paper in his hands — the menu. Perusing its offerings, I had a hard time deciding what to get. As you would assume in a place like this, there are spring rolls and tofu burgers but then they also offer fried chicken, penne marinara and El Salvadorean paella. Huh? Sure, it’s an eclectic menu but in a fascinating, non-random way.

Finally I settled on the salmon teriyaki ($9) — salmon steak flavored with teriyaki sauce and served with seasoned rice and “vegetable ribbons,” which are cooked squash sliced thinly longway. My friend ordered the curry shrimp on our server’s recommendation ($8.75, shrimp and vegetables in green Japanese curry sauce on seasoned rice). And curious about the okra rolls ($5 — chicken, okra, and enoki mushroom wrapped in a lightly fried roll) we got an order of that.

And let me just say, it was allll so tasty! The okra rolls covered in salsa just melted in my mouth, as well as burned it a bit due to its high core temperature. But I didn’t care. The pain of a burned tongue didn’t stop me from going in for more. I especially loved my salmon teriyaki. The sauce wasn’t too sweet and it was so savory that I mopped it up with my rice. The vegetables were lightly buttered and complemented the dish’s flavors wonderfully.

I looked over at my friend to see if she liked her meal and found her sitting there staring at her just-emptyed plate. Hm, we ate too fast. Were we that hungry or is the food that good? I’ve no problem going back another time to figure it out.

The quick and attentive servers made it a stress-free dining experience, especially during a lunch hour. But I’d like to see what the scene is during their dinner time, maybe after catching a movie at the Nuart, as well as find out what that almond jello dessert ($2.75) is all about.

Everybody Wang Chung: Saints & Sinners’ Prom

I never went to my prom. It just seemed lame. Instead, I think I stayed home and practiced dance moves in front of my mirror. Have I always regretted that I skipped out on what should be a landmark occasion in every teen girl’s life? Nope, especially since I knew that I’d be invited to proms well into my adulthood.

Saints & Sinners, your favorite West L.A. theme bar and mine, is throwing its own version of the popular prom theme party, complete with the crowning of the S&S King and Queen at midnight. (I want that crown!) And I’m pretty sure the punch will be spiked.

To participate in this oh-so-special night, show up in your best ’80s prom getup and get priority entrance. They suggest taffeta dresses and ruffly tuxedo shirts, but I’m thinking, why not go whole hog and have fun? That’s right, emulate that classic DIY dress from Pretty in Pink or wear a skinny tie to go with your Flock of Seagulls do.

Crimped hair, fluorescent anything, legwarmers, girl mullets, poofy sleeves… Bringing back nostalgic albeit cringeworthy fashion is always funny…um, fun for everyone.

I can’t wait! I already got my fun prom date lined up; now where did I store that hair crimper?

REMINDER: Tix for Radiohead at the Greek on Sale

Tickets for Radiohead (one of the best bands EVER) at the Greek Theatre June 29th and 30th are scheduled to go on sale this Thursday the 25th at 10am. For some reason there doesn’t seem to be any presale information through KROQ or Radiohead’s W.A.S.T.E. site. WTF? But about the only thing you can do is sign up to receive a text reminder for your cell phone right before the tickets go on sale. Ah well, good luck to you.

You can always try your luck with KROQ’s contest this week which promises to put you in the pit if you’re the right caller. Being caller 106.7 or whatever also gets you an Xbox and the chance to win tickets to see Radiohead at Bonnaroo — a 3-Day music and arts festival in Tennessee.

They are an awesome band to see live, but I wish they would play at a bigger venue because their shows always sell out. Apparently they like the intimacy of the Greek Theatre venue. Bah!
