“Get Fat” Tuesdays: Yep, Taco Tuesdays

Carnitas by SpeedM on Flickr

It’s Tuesday, you know what that means? Yep, Taco Tuesdays! Why not celebrate surviving Monday with all the delicious tacos you can eat for cheap and a satisfying happy hour?

Duke’s Barefoot Bar up in Malibu offers $2.50 fish tacos for their Taco Tuesdays 4pm to close. You can order up the fish grilled, beer-battered or very spicy. The tacos are simply fish strips with some pico de gallo in flour tortillas but it’s so tasty in its simplicity. I usually order up two spicy fish tacos and put some hot sauce on ‘em. And then soothe the burn with a bottle of Bohemia.

The happy hour at this surfer bar by the sea, unfortunately, is one of the shortest only going from 4 to 6pm, meaning I can never seem to make it in time. By the time I get past the rush-hour traffic on PCH, happy hour is over. Just as well though, happy hour here means half-price Barefoot Bar entrees. Even though I’ll miss out getting my fave mango BBQ burger (half-pound Angus beef, mango BBQ sauce, onion rings and cheddar) for only $4.38, at least I have the fish tacos to keep me company. Well, that and all the cute guys. On Tuesdays, this place gets packed with locals and tourists so good luck finding a seat.

Margaritas by dotsara on FlickrIf you don’t want to have to worry about trying to maneuver PCH post-happy hour, then I highly recommend you try El Torito‘s 99-cent Taco Tuesdays.

This has so much more going for it than the others: cheap tacos (fajita-style steak or chicken), $3.25 house margaritas (pretty potent stuff), 2-hour validated parking, available seating, happy hour til 8pm (!), and it’s located safely inland away from curvy coastal highways.

Now, I hear that Baja Sharkeez in Manhattan Beach has their own Taco Tuesdays but I’ve never been. Just as well cuz it sounds like trouble. Happy hour runs from 3 to 6:30 pm, meaning buy one get one free (any drink size, including pitchers and buckets!), and their tacos (fish or chicken) are $3. Friends who have gone have offered their nearby pads to crash at after happy hour, cuz you can get that wasted, obviously.

Now for a truly “get fat” Taco Tuesday, check out West Hollywood’s Marix Tex Mex Cafe where it’s all the tacos you can eat for $7.95. That’s right: beef, chicken, carnitas and veggie tacos. You order from the menu and they just keep coming. Happy hour is from 4 to 7pm with $4.25 house margaritas, $3 domestic cervezas and $3.50 Merlot or Chardonnay. Haven’t been here either but judging from the reviews, the lines are long and the patio gets packed so plan ahead.

The Best Yoga Class for Cheap: Santa Monica Power Yoga

Balance by kk+ on Flickr

Several years ago, a friend turned me on to Santa Monica Power Yoga. “It’s on a donation-only basis and the classes are always crowded. You HAVE to take a class with Bryan. He’s the best.” Mind you, back then I had never done yoga before so everything was new to me. And it was sorta baptism by fire: the rented mats, the closed windows and steamy air from the student-generated heat, and 90 minutes of painfully held poses. But she was right, it was quite a satisfying workout. After the class I was in pain but in a good way.

I went with my friend twice before she said, “I don’t want you to go anymore, it makes me nervous.” I guess my turning red in the face and doing child’s pose for 70% of the class didn’t help.

Since then I’ve never returned but recently I keep hearing about it from many different people so now I’m considering giving it another chance. The yoga studio has now expanded to two studios (its new one is nearby on 2nd Street) because of its popularity. Unfortunately, because of said popularity, the star teacher, Bryan Kest, is hardly there to teach classes as he’s usually off traveling the world spreading the joy of yoga to other lands. Yet, there are so many instructors to choose from that you can’t go wrong taking a class here. If you don’t like the new agey approach of one, you might enjoy the spartan approach of another. It’s just trial and error until you find one that suits you.

The classes are offered in three levels:
* Level 1-2: For anybody and everybody (for beginners)
* Level 3-4: A private class where permission is needed prior to day of attendance (intermediate)
* All Levels: For anybody and everybody

Yeah, I don’t really know what the difference is between Level 1-2 and All Levels.

If you’re going for the first time, know that it’s best to arrive at least 30 minutes before class as a long line forms pretty quickly and you want to be able to stake out a spot before the room fills up. If anything, try taking a class during an off time rather than the popular times of right before and after work.

Things to bring:
* A towel (you’ll be sweating buckets)
* A yoga mat (or you can rent one at the studio for $2, but I strongly recommend bringing your own)
* A 1.5-liter bottle of water (with the warm air and workout, you’ll need it)
* Wear comfortable clothes, especially a form-fitting top so that your shirt won’t fall over your face when your torso is inverted for forward bends

As mentioned the fee is donation-only, but $11 is the recommended amount. After class everyone drops their money in the donation box by the door so no one is counting your money. And if you can’t donate $11 now, drop whatever amount you do have in the box and make up for it next time.

The class is quite a workout as you’re holding yoga poses and moving from one pose to another pretty quickly, which can be difficult for first-timers. Fortunately, the instructors and your classmates understand if you have to retreat to child’s pose (a resting posture) every now and then. Everyone here is of the mind that you should always listen to your body and never overexert yourself, always go at your own pace. Something I was doing and shouldn’t have felt bad for.

Enjoy, and Namaste!

Tranquil and Marvelous: Opening Day at the Getty Villa

Busted

At the last minute, I was able to score some tickets for the Getty Villa on opening day but was really reluctant to go anticipating opening weekend crowds, parking lot hassles and crowded exhibits. Yet, it was an ahh-fest from the moment we drove up the driveway off PCH to when we left the museum driveway. I guess that’s what the timed tickets were for.

From the LA Times:

The Getty deliberately downplayed the opening to avoid hoopla or crowds that would have run afoul not only of neighbors but also attendance and traffic restrictions imposed by the Los Angeles City Council as a condition of approving the renovation.

After we were guided to the lot through three different checkpoints, we finally made our way to the virtually empty parking garage. Upon arrival to the first set of many staircases, a museum volunteer greeted us by handing us opening-day laurel wreaths. Sara asked me, “Are you going to wear that?” True, they were like high-brow Mickey Mouse ears in this ancient world museum, but…hells yeah! It was funny to see everyone from seniors to tweens wearing them…the only ones not wearing them? The children.

Art ObservedOverheard at the Getty Villa on Saturday:

“Courtney, check out this ancient beer bong.”

“‘Bactria.’ That must be where the word ‘bacteria’ comes from.”

“He was a buddy of Getty so I was sitting down and talking with him…”

The museum and its grounds–from amphitheater to its gardens–were just beautiful with ample subjects to photograph. I couldn’t get enough. In fact that’s basically all that we did and I don’t think it would have been as fun if we weren’t taking pictures of every bit. There’s something about zooming in with a camera that makes me more appreciative of every moment. After skimming over the Roman, Greek and Etruscan artifacts, I wanted to run to the gardens. I’ve seen that pool in all the published pictures of the newly renovated museum and now I wanted to see it for myself.

Getty Villa Garden Being a gorgeous day, the blue pool sparkled. Black statues with eery white eyes populated the garden. The occasional couple strolled the stretches of marble-floored, columned hallways which sat on either sides of the pool. Finally exhausting the garden, we revisited the exhibits. The highlights were the “Antiquity and Photography” exhibit and the “Getty Villa Reimagined” one. The former displayed 19th-century photographs of ancient Mediterranean sites while the latter traced the development of the Villa through original sketchbooks and models.

With my camera battery low, my memory card full and my stomach on empty, we finally made our way to the museum cafe. Just as I suspected the grab-and-go cafe offered everything from $5.95 three-cheese pizza to $13 pasta entrees.

I considered it briefly since sitting on the terrace would have just completed the museum visit, but being cheap and famished we opted to eat elsewhere. In any case, I had my fill of the Getty Villa, at least until I get to come back in April to use up my initial tickets.

Many Yuks From 5 Canucks: Kids in the Hall Return!

Men in dresses

Back in the mid-’90s I was a HUGE Kids in the Hall fan. So much so that I even taught myself HTML so that I could build a fan site dedicated to them. My sister and I would tape their shows off Comedy Central and then watch the tape 24/7. We’d quote them all the time which was really annoying to our non-KitHie friends.

And it’s not like we lusted after them and had a thing for men in dresses. Not at all. I don’t know how to explain how we were able to love them so psychotically and so completely without going the stalker route. Maybe it was because we were still in college and didn’t really have the time to devote to stalking them. But we just found their humor brilliant, on par with Monty Python. How can you not fall in love with the clearly insane Sizzler Sisters or evil Simon and Hecubus? Even just rereading the transcripts of the skits has me in stitches.

Anyhoo, the guys disappeared. Well, after Brain Candy, their much anticipated but highly disappointing foray into cinema, they dispersed into Hollywood. Some resigned themselves to performing stand-up, some popped up in movie/TV cameos, and one became a host for a TV celebrity poker show.

Until now. Kids in the Hall have returned! They will be doing three nights of shows at the Steve Allen Theatre, February 23rd-25th. Tickets aren’t on sale yet but the grapevine says they will be available a couple of weeks before the shows. Since it’s an intimate venue of 110 seats, tickets will probably be snapped up.

But I’m so going to be there. Word is that the guys will be performing all-new material like their early days at the Rivoli in Toronto. I’m not sure what that means but if it means pre-Lorne Michaels and pre-Brain Candy, sounds like it’ll be a night of nonstop yuks.

Turtle Races at Brennan’s: Where Not to Take a Date

Flickr shot by Jeff L.
Judging from that gleam in his eye, you can tell he just wants to win.

OK, this isn’t fair of me to make this judgment especially since no one has ever taken me on a date here and, rather, my friend told me about when it happened to her, but I just can’t believe that it even came up as an option for a first date. Not that I have anything against going to the turtle races, in fact, I even considered checking it out to write it up. But, come on. For a first date?

You’ve got your bar food, your beer, sports on TV, and drunken men yelling at turtles. Fun place to go with your buddies, yes. A fine place to impress your date? No.

In any case, Brennan’s, around since 1972, is a spirited Irish sports bar whose claim to fame is the turtle races. Every Thursday night from 9pm to close, bar patrons gather around the backyard area to witness this Westside spectacle. The turtles are classified into one of seven divisions ranging from “Midget” to “Monster.” And even though the event is said to run til close, there are only two rounds of racing held about an hour apart…well, those mofos are slowwww. Participants are encouraged to either bring their own turtle to race or to rent one at the bar for $3 (proceeds go to Heal the Bay).

From AOL City Guide:

A genius strategy to get a group all fired up and wasted is to have them watch a competition that has no end. People here get more excited about turtle racing than a Laker game.

Let me reiterate one more time: Fun for buddies, not fine for a date.

Soundtrack for L.A. Living: Opening a Can of Whoop-Ass

What: Tomoyasu Hotei’s “Battle Without Honor or Humanity”

Kill Bill Vol. 1 Who: Those about to do battle….or those about to rock, whether you’re the screenwriter about to make the big pitch, the scrawny kid about to confront the big bully, or simply someone about to cross the room because you didn’t like the way that bastard in the corner looked at you.

When/Where: During the long walk to where this throwdown is about to go down.

Why: It makes you feel like a bad ass. And I just imagine walking down, no, strutting down, an alley in slow motion with my girls behind me ready to back me up, if for some reason I need it. Not likely, but you never know.

The Getty Villa Reopens: So That’s What $275 Million Looks Like

Getty Villa by Gary Wayne

Every time I drive down PCH I pass by that beautiful Romanesque villa perched atop a cliff overlooking the Pacific. When I first moved to L.A. I had only known it as my dream home, but soon after I learned it was actually the Getty museum. And just when I was getting around to visiting it, the Villa closed in 1997 for a $275-million renovation/expansion.

Now after nearly 10 years, a new amphitheater, auditorium, and research/conservation facilities later, the Getty Villa reopens on January 28th. Since a majority of work has been moved to the Getty Center off the 405, the “world’s richest museum” exhibits Getty’s collection of about 44,000 Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities–fitting for the architecture of the building, almost transporting you to an ancient world.

From LA TIMES Calendarlive.com:

Modeled after the Villa dei Papiri, which was covered in the AD 79 eruption of Mt. Vesuvius and later excavated at Herculaneum, the 1974 replica was built to house Getty’s collection of antiquities, French furniture and Baroque and Renaissance paintings.

But not only is the art the draw but so is the landscape, which rivals the Huntington Library & Gardens in beauty and grandeur. And it’s estimated that the average museum visitor will spend about 3.5 hours perusing everything. That’s all?!

Like the Getty Center, the Villa will feature a wide variety of public programs, including outdoor theater production, musical performances, movie screenings and artist demonstrations.

The museum’s advance, timed tickets are free BUT they are all booked up through July 31st.* Thinking I was slick, I booked up tickets as soon as I heard about the reopening back in October cuz I knew they would be snapped up like hot cakes. However the soonest I could get them for was in April. Oh well, yay! By April, all the flowers will be in bloom and it’ll be gorgeous time to tour my dream garden.
