Backstage of Sony: Quite Possibly “the Best Dive Bar in the World”
Posted by Caroline on Crack under Los Angeles, Nightlife -
Don’t know these people, but don’t they look like they’re having dazed and confused fun?
I love it when I find a “new” bar in my neighborhood and apparently Backstage is “the best dive bar in the world.” I’m not sure what exactly qualifies it as such since it seems like a typical dive bar, minus the free popcorn and cigarette smoke. However, it’s open 365 days a year, mixed drinks are $3, and there’s “Killer Karaoke” Thursday through Saturday.
You also have a pool table, dartboard, tabletop Ms. PacMan, eclectic jukebox, huge screen TVs AND, my favorite and a standout, a firepit. Their Web site says that a lot of Sony folks hang here since it’s behind the Sony studios and if that’s the case, I likes the Sony people cuz the clientele of Backstage are pretty friendly and relaxed for industry people.
I really like coming here to wind down when I don’t want to think about where I want to go for a drink. And I’d almost consider coming by myself. It’s THAT low-key. Not a fan of the food (eww, grease-soaked quesadillas), but a big fan of the cheap cocktails poured with a heavy hand.

[…] I haven’t been to the Backstage in awhile. I had stopped going to this self-proclaimed “best dive bar in the world” after it seemed to gain much popularity. Now, the hipsters outnumbered the barflies. And during karaoke night, the drunk jocks bogarded the mic from the old regulars. But last night I thought I’d revisit my old hood and my friend and I stopped by for a drink. At 8pm, I figured there wouldn’t be much of a crowd. Wrong. The jukebox was blaring Run-DMC and most all the seats were taken by the young folk. […]

The new young clientelle are what this place needed. The local’s are blue collar and inbred. I wore a Virginia Tech hat in support of my school, and some inbred local kept giving me a hard time. The locals are in need of brains, and I am glad they are getting squeezed out. And by the way, the Vienna Inn is the best dive bar in the world- they only serve beer.
